While Android smartphones are breaking records for display refresh rates, iPhones are still content with 60Hz screens. But everything may change this year. It’s time for Apple to move to high refresh rates, because in a couple of years this feature has become more of a necessity than a luxury, which means that if the iPhone manufacturer wants to keep up with the competition, it simply needs to increase the display frequency.
Insiders say that Apple planned to increase the refresh rate of the iPhone screen last year. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max were supposed to have 120Hz ProMotoin screens, but at the very last moment Apple dropped the feature, delaying its rollout for a year. The iPhone 13 series, or rather, the two older models with the Pro prefix, should receive OLED screens of the LTPO type, made using low-temperature polycrystalline silicon. The transition to a new type of screens will add the function of an adaptive image refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz. The smartphone will automatically adjust the screen frequency depending on the content and usage scenario, which in theory should have a positive effect on energy efficiency.
The more new features, including the higher the refresh rate of the display, the faster the battery will drain. Yes, this is the price you have to pay for a smooth picture and modern technology. This is why we expect Apple to increase the battery capacity of the iPhone 13.
Last year, Apple for some unknown reason reduced the size of the batteries of all four iPhone 12 models. For the most part, the autonomy remained at the level of the iPhone 11 thanks to the increased energy efficiency of the A14 chip. But this is unlikely to work again, especially if the company is going to double the refresh rate of the screen.
Along with the increase in battery capacity, many Apple fans have been waiting for a year now to reduce the so-called monobrow or notch at the top of the screen, which appeared in 2017 with the release of the iPhone X. All insiders unanimously say that they can count on Apple to completely abandon this element design is not worth it, at least for the next couple of years. But the company really plans to reduce its size. Rumor has it that Apple will move the speaker higher, right up to the top edge of the case, which will require a smaller notch for the TrueDepth system.
When Apple introduced the iPhone X in 2017 and replaced its Touch ID fingerprint reader with Face ID, many users supported the decision. But then no one could have imagined that after a few years, unlocking an iPhone with a password would be easier than using a face scanner. Yes, the whole point is that due to the coronavirus pandemic and the mandatory wearing of protective masks in public places, unlocking an iPhone using Face ID is extremely problematic — for this you need to either constantly remove the mask or have an Apple Watch on your wrist. That is why, in the last year, the Internet is increasingly talking about the need to return the Touch ID.
Last year, Apple released the iPad Air with a Touch ID scanner in the power button. And it seems to us that doing the same with the iPhone will be as easy as shelling pears. Yes, we’d love to see Apple embed a fingerprint scanner into the iPhone’s display, but in light of recent developments and the complexities of using Face ID, we’d love to see Touch ID return, even as a side button. Agree, this is a great idea as an alternative way to unlock your iPhone.
If we are likely to see an increase in the display frequency and battery capacity, as well as a decrease in monobrow in the iPhone 13 series, then the transition from Lightning to USB Type-C is unlikely. But nevertheless, many would be happy if Apple ditched its proprietary connector in favor of a more versatile and modern USB-C interface, as was the case with the iPad.
While the manufacturers of Android smartphones are competing with each other, who have higher charging power, Apple has chosen a different path. She stayed away from the fast charging race for a long time, but then she still implemented this technology in her iPhones. True, the fast charging power of current iPhones is limited to 20W, although many Android smartphones, even mid-range ones, support fast charging above 30W. That is why we expect that Apple will gradually increase the charging power of the iPhone, but being realistic, we do not expect that this year the smartphones of the apple brand will start charging at a rate of more than 100 watts.
